Air Dried Oak Beams
Air dried (part-seasoned) oak beams are cut to size and naturally dried for up to five years. During this process, the timber gradually shrinks and develops splits, enhancing the character associated with traditional oak.
With a reduced moisture content, air dried beams offer greater stability than green oak, making them an excellent choice for frames incorporating large glazed areas where movement must be minimised.
These beams typically develop a silvery-grey surface, although planing can reveal the warm natural oak colour beneath if required.
Green Oak Beams (Fresh Sawn)
Green oak beams are freshly sawn from newly felled trees and are ideal for traditional construction methods. We supply green oak in sizes ranging from 100mm × 100mm up to 450mm × 450mm, with lengths of up to 9 metres.
Our beams are generally cut from the centre of the tree (boxed heart), producing sapwood-free timber with a moisture content typically exceeding 50%. As the beams dry in situ, natural shrinkage and checking will occur — a process that adds to the authentic appearance of oak structures.
